Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 2026

Summary: WordLens does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data to any server operated by WordLens. Your API key and all data stay on your device and go directly to the AI provider you choose.

1. What WordLens does

WordLens is a Chrome extension that allows you to select text on any webpage and receive a context-aware definition powered by an AI language model. The extension reads the text you select and a snippet of the visible page content, sends this to an AI provider API of your choosing, and displays the response in a tooltip.

2. Data we collect

We collect nothing. WordLens has no backend server, no analytics, no telemetry, and no database. The developer (Nawaz Momin) has no ability to see your usage, your API key, or the text you define.

3. Data stored on your device

WordLens stores the following in Chrome's local storage.sync on your device:

If Chrome sync is enabled in your browser, this data may be synced across your devices by Google — encrypted in transit. This is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.

4. Data sent to third-party AI providers

When you trigger a definition, WordLens sends the following directly from your browser to your chosen AI provider's API:

This data goes directly from your browser to the provider. WordLens does not see, intercept, log, or store this data at any point. Each provider's handling of this data is governed by their own privacy policy:

5. Permissions used and why

6. Content scripts

WordLens injects a content script (content.js) into all webpages. This script is idle by default and only activates when you explicitly press Alt+D or use the right-click menu to request a definition. It does not monitor your browsing, track which sites you visit, or read page content passively.

7. Children's privacy

WordLens is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.

8. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, a new version will be published with an updated date. Continued use of the extension constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
